Float on into Avalon by The Melusine – you won’t forget it.

Looking for a Covid-19 safe place to dine? Avalon by Melusine pop-up restaurant at St. Katharine Docks offers a fabulous floating dining experience – but hurry there are only six exclusive dates left to dine!

Opening a restaurant in London is tough at the best of times, but anyone opening one in December 2019 has been unlucky, to say the least. Sustainable seafood restaurant Melusine at St. Katherine Docks did just that but have so far managed to whether the storm, adapting during the lockdown and turning themselves into a shop for locals, to offer fresh fruit, vegetables, and sustainable fish to go.

Now they have gone one step further with the launch of Avalon – al fresco restaurant on the dock, on offer Thursdays – Saturday evenings in September.

Our Visit To Avalon by The Melusine

On arrival, I had to ring the doorbell and wait for a waiter to escort me down the waterside ramp through the locked gate. I felt like I was entering an exclusive yacht club. Warmly lit scattered tables sat under a white canopy, decked with twinkling lights with the open kitchen forefront at one end of the pontoon.

Avalon – Dinner On The Dock

One seated, myself and my THMs partner in crime Candace, cracked right on with the signature Avalon cocktail (a dirty martini made with delicious Mermaid gin, lemon, and thyme).

Oysters were £1 each? What a steal. We tried both types. Kumomoto and the larger rock oysters. Both were delicious and served with vermouth, ginger, and red onion vinaigrette. Tabasco arrived too at our request for those that like it hot!

The food is split into small sharing dishes and larger plates. To start we went for a fresh and lovely dressed crab served on endive, and scallops served in the shell cooked with samphire and chopped pickled kohlrabi.

Just like The Melusine, all dishes on the menu feature sustainably-sourced seafood from across the British Isles.

We didn’t go all out on the big plates by ordering the lobster but opted instead for the monkfish. This was a hearty portion of a meaty type of fish served with borlotti beans and broccoli. Some lovely crispy wedges and heritage tomato salad went down well on the side.

Avalon – Drinks On The Dock

The wine list was concise and looked well thought out and while I can’t vouch for it all, I can suggest a lovely English wine – 2018 Leftfield Blend, New hall | Essex, England – Showing fresh and characteristic honeydew melon and peach notes.

We finished with an Espresso Martini in the bar area and then giggled back up the ramp on our merry way home.

This is a delightedly different dining experience with only a handful of dates left to sample it. If you have one date night out this September, make it at Avalon!
