Matilda

Matilda the Musical

An absolutely delightful West End Musical of jumpsquiffling proportions!

You know you’re in for a treat as the stage of the Cambridge Theatre fills with children, each of them singing the miracle of their own birth in the hilarious opening act written by the comedic lyricist Tim Minchin.  There is one little girl who stands out amongst mummy dearest’s prettiest perfectness of princesses and boldest bravest soldiers, Matilda, the jumped up little germ.

Writer Dennis Kelley sticks faithfully to Roald Dahl’s outrageously fun character development. You get the feeling that Roald Dahl would be beaming sitting next to you watching this adaptation of his masterpiece.

Welcoming their 100th Matilda this Autumn, the Royal Shakespeare Company have created something so splendiferous it creates a lasting impression with all who see it. No wonder really that it has won 90 international awards and has been seen by 9 million people!

The story is incredibly timely. In a world where bullies seem to be having the last laugh of late; the underlying themes of solidarity and challenging authority are all the more moving. Matilda rises up against her oppressors with her “revolting” little friends in the most mischievous of ways. Playfully encouraging us all to be a little bit naughty.

While all the characters had their moments Zoe Simon’s waifish frame is the perfect embodiment of the bookish Matilda. So completely opposite her larger than life parents, the ghastly Wormwoods, her impish face an endearing portrait of sweet rebellion.

But Mrs Trunchbull could be the best villain ever to grace a West End stage. Her vile character so masterfully captured by Elliot Harper. The Hammer throwing headmistress still revelling in the glory of her has-been Olympic hay day, it seems her cruelty knows no limits. She revels in tormenting the students and Miss Honey, their sweet teacher, as scene after scene trumps her last terrible deed. All told, of course with the sinister yet silly style that has given Roald Dahl’s stories such timeless appeal.

Along with a superb cast of characters, Matilda the Musical wows you with some spectacular special effects and unforgettable scenes. Still considered to be one of the most innovative British Musicals of the Century, your children will love it and so will you. Bookings are now open until December 2020 but this is a sell-out show so we recommend booking early to secure the best seats.
