L'ami Malo

A fancy new crêperie L’Ami Malo has opened in the winding streets of Spitalfields, just by Liverpool Streeet Station.

L’Ami Malo

Venture down to Artillery Passage and take a trip to this truly stylish galette house (that’s savoury pancakes made from buckwheat to all you non Frenchies).

L’Ami Malo is owned by French duo Emilien Lesourd and Vincent Couvreur, alongside Breton-born head chef Williams Guillemot. Together they have created a sleek all-day eatery and bar with slick minimal interiors and plenty of va va voom.

Tip: if you’re obsessed with getting the best #foodporn pics on instagram, request the little table opposite the chef’s pass. This cosy spot for two has the ideal lighting for food-photo hungry bloggers, featuring its very own pendant lamp elevated over the middle of the table-top to enable well lit pics (it’s like it was made for us). Plus, you get to watch all of the food on the pass when it’s ready to go out to diners.

We went for their fusion dish to start– rolled buckwheat pancake presented as Japanese maki-rolls. The veggie version ‘tomato tartare, roasted hazelnuts and baby spinach’ was fresh and pleasant if lacking a little punch.

In a break from the Brittany norm, I opted for a gorgeously rich Jerusalem artichoke soup to follow but also got my crêpe fix by trying my dining partners fabulous Morteau sausage, leek fondue, new potato and French mustard galette.

Naturally, classic sweet crêpes also feature and come with fillings from lemon and sugar to apple compote, butter sauce and salted caramel.

We sampled some cocktails from the succinct and tempting drinks list, which along with cocktails focuses on craft beers from Normandy and Brittany, exclusively French wines and my French soft drink fave Orangina!

I tried The Belle (Botanist Gin, Lillet Rose, St Germain, Grapefruit Bitters) and my crêperie companion sampled a lovely Pommeau Spritz – a blend of apple juice, cider, calvados and apple blossom flower.

Right behind us, at the back of the restaurant there’s a tiny little bar ‘Le Moulin’ a perfect covert place to perch for clandestine rendezvous …. or just a drink.

Disclaimer: we were invited to conduct a family review but have to say this one is better saved for date night due to a lack of space for buggies and no buggy access to the bathroom, which is down a set of spiral stairs.

Call in the babysitter – this new place is worth venturing out for.
