The May bank holiday weekend is due to bring lots of sunshine!

A great time to head outside and explore some fantastic Beltane themed family events. We’re also particularly excited about our upcoming Mad Zappers Tea Party! Hope to see you there.

1 Families Go Wild Beltane Bonfire  

Families Go Wild will be celebrating the peak of spring with a Beltane Bonfire at Spitalfields City Farm this weekend! There’ll be spring crafts and of course a fire, with some light cooking involved!

2 GEFFRYE Merrie May Day

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a traditional maypole and dancing on the front lawns of the Geffrye Museum.

There will be stalls and activities for all ages, including the Geffrye Explorers’ Garden Cart, upcycled eco insect hotels from Alan Briggs Bughouses, spring plants and herbs from Rootcraft, vintage fabric furnishings from Leah Rose Designs, and beautiful blooms from Tooting florist Gray & Greenery.

Have a picnic and enjoy some delicious BBQ-style food from the Sunshine Curry Club, homemade cakes from Feast London and locally brewed beers courtesy of our friends at Hackney Brewery.

3 May Day Festival

Celebrate the arrival of Spring with Stepney City Farm’s second large-scale May Day Festival. This year will be a very special celebration, as they mark 40 years of urban agriculture and heritage crafts in Stepney.

See sheep shearing and wool spinning demonstrations, learn beginners may pole dances, sample delicious local produce, and buy traditional and modern crafts from local artists.

4 Crib Notes: Queer Spaces 1980s – Today

Join the White Chapel Gallery in celebrating queer culture, with a tour of our archive gallery exhibition Queer Spaces 1980s – Today led by Curator Nayia Yiakoumaki.

This event is for families with children under the age of 5. After the tour you’ll get a chance to mingle with other mums and talk about the works you have seen or the daily manoeuvres of motherhood, bound to find something in common either way.

5 Mad Zappers Tea Party

One of our favourite family events this month but we may be a little biased! A THMs collaboration with Wiki Mums and ZAPspace Trampolines! Bouncing, soft play, Alice in Wonderland Characters and Mad Hatters crafts to entertain the little ones. Tea and sandwiches, cake and scones with jam and clotted cream from Propa Tea to enjoy. Mingle with parents and celebrate the Wonderland of raising Little Zappers. Please book in advance for high tea as spaces are limited.

6 Tea Dance for Little People present: Victorian Punk it up

Be transported on a musical time-travelling journey from the Victorian era into the future. Experience the sounds of the cello and the clarinet, immerse yourself in an eclectic mixture of London sounds and get hands on with our experiment by contributing your unique sound to an original live mixed performance. Arrive 15 minutes early and make your own time travelling goggles too.

7 Dalston Children’s Festival

We love it when the community gets together for the sake of the children! Community groups and places like Dalston Curve Garden, Arcola theatre, Hackney Playbus and more get together for this annual celebration of childhood with family events for all ages. Get creative, learn how to hula hoop, play giant games of jenga and chess and make pizza. Just some of the activities on offer over the 2 weekends.

8 Family Day: Queer Spaces 1980s – Today

The Whitechapel Gallery’s quarterly event for families returns. This time the gallery are exploring the archive gallery exhibition Queer Spaces 1980s – Today. Families can join the fun activities led by contemporary artists and explore the themes.  How can we make spaces where we feel safe? To talk, to play, to be ourselves and embrace our differences?

9 Wake Up Gigs

Wake Up Gigs showcase new artists for parents to enjoy live music in a relaxed atmosphere in a child friendly venue at family friendly times. Their next gig will take place up on the seventh floor of Ace Hotel Shoreditch. Enjoy some delicious food, free tea and coffee or something from the bar. The kids will also be able to enjoy classic album cover colouring in and a small soft play corner for the littlest ones. One of those family events everyone can enjoy. This gig will feature Luke Marzec and another artist who is yet to be revealed.

10  Street League Skateboaring World Tour

The Street League Skateboarding World Tour will stop off at Copper Box Arena in May!The Copper Box Arena will host some of the world’s greatest skaters as they go head to head and show off their dazzling tricks and skills. Score some cool parent points and book some tickets to see what will no doubt be a spectacular show!
