A Single Mother Steps into the Ring

The one, the only, legendary champion of single mothers returns to Stratford Circus with Fighter Thursday 25th – Saturday 27th of April. Fresh off the back of her acclaimed show, Muvvahood, writer and performer Libby Liburd and director Julie Addy present their newest piece of powerhouse theatre, using their trademark mix of hard-hitting facts, humour and lived experience.  Parents attending the matinee performance at 2pm on Saturday the 27th will have access to a crèche.

“I thought about giving up. But then I remembered who was watching.”

Single mother Lee is a fighter. She’s used to fighting the world, alone. No one’s in her corner, she’s down but not out – yet. Then she steps into Tommy’s Gym and everything changes: plunged into the world of boxing, Lee’s fight really begins.

Based on Libby Liburd’s own experience as a single mother stepping into the ring for the first time and the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated sport. Libby initially got into boxing because boxing gyms were the only gyms she could bring her son while she trained. She soon grew to love the sport and the thrill of facing up against her rivals.

“When I first started boxing, I’d done a few aerobics classes and a bit of BodyPump and I thought I was ready. I wasn’t. There’s something about the hardcore-ness of boxing training; you feel like you’re at death’s door, but you also feel invincible and unstoppable. It changes you from the inside out.”

The performance also pays homage to the pioneering British female boxers that literally fought for their right to fight; Fighter is a raucously visceral show that packs a punch.

Featuring a cast of genuine young boxers from Fight for Peace creating a loud, sweaty, immersive fusion of boxing and theatre that will leave you on the edge of your ringside seat. The show aims not simply to empower mothers but all those who face adversity.

Joining Libby Liburd and the Fight for Peace boxers onstage will be BAFTA and Golden Globes Award-nominated actress Cathy Tyson, and David Schaal (The Inbetweeners Movie; The Office).

A performance that brings the world of sport onto the theatre stage to inspire us all to challenge everyday stigmas and stereotypes.

Pay What You Can Crèche

Because a show about a single mother should have some awareness of the challenge lone parenting brings, Stratford Circus Arts Centre will provide a crèche. The service will be provided on a pay-what-you can basis for the 2pm performance on Saturday 27th April. Spaces are limited so you’ll need to book in advance, there’s no charge to book but donations will be welcome on the day.

You’ll be able to add tickets for the crèche to your order once you’ve added tickets to the matinee performance to your basket.
