Events that will make your summer in East London the best it can be and most of them are extremely cheap or FREE. We’ll probably add to this list as more activities pop up but for now get your calendars ready and plan for a brilliant summer. You only get 18 summers with them after all…

Tower Hamlets Summer Activities Guide

You may have seen this already but if not you must check it out. An extensive guide to all things family in our borough this summer. Mostly free with great sports days, arts and crafts, stay and plays, mini festivals and more. Most of the activities are free but some will require prebooking as spaces may be limited.

Styx, Stones and Roman Bones

The Museum of London Docklands will take your family on a journey to the Roman Underworld with a month of free interactive shows. Visitors will help a Roman spirit travel to the afterlife by using song and dance, creating special trinkets, and joining a procession, just as the Romans would have done to help their loved ones complete their journey over 2,000 years ago.

Visit the museum’s exhibition, Roman Dead, featuring the first sarcophagus discovered in London in over a decade as well as 11 skeletons and 250 other objects left behind in graves by friends and loved ones.

When:  Every Wednesday- Saturday Aug 1st-31st, 11.30am – 12.15pm, 1.30-2.15pm & 3-3.45pm

Nordic Summer

This August, inspired by the V&A Museum of Childhood’s exhibition Century of the Child: Nordic Design for Children, the museum is encouraging families to go Nordic. Enjoy folk performances and story-telling, unleash their creativity with design and craft activities and visit with special guest animals from Spitalfields City Farm. Although we love the MOC everyday of the week, its especially great for when family comes to visit for a walk down memory lane! Free, drop in, and suitable for all ages.

When: Thursdays 2-30 August 2018 11.00-16.00

The Geffrye

This August head to the lush green oasis of the Geffrye gardens for a fun-filled family day with activities for children aged 2 -16. Spread out your blanket and share a feast on the lawns of this beautiful walled sanctuary. There will be craft and digital workshops, multi-sensory, hands-on activities and Nursery Rhyme Time sessions for the youngest visitors. Book a tour and see how London’s poor and elderly lived in former times with a family friendly tour of the restored 18th century almshouses.

Summer Jazz Weekenders 

Fly over the Thames on the Emirates Sky Line over to the Greenwich peninsula from the 18-19th of August for a small, chilled out and intimate Summer Jazz weekender. A community festival for all the jazzy cats and their cool kittens. Plenty of outdoor fun to be had with acclaimed musicians and outdoor fun for all ages. Children aged 7 and up can even join the circus for the afternoon learning acrobatic techniques Upswing Aerial! Join in collaborative craft projects or tie die yourself a pair of statement socks with the ‘Get Rich or Tie Dyeing’ from Lizzie King.

Summer by the River

Have you been to the Summer by the River Festival yet? This summer long spectacular boasts a packed schedule of free outdoor events and entertainment. Families can expect fun arts and crafts along with kiddy friendly musical performances and film screenings. Activities might include making bumblebees and ladybirds from recycled cardboard or a Disco Olympics with games, glitter and prizes or making flower crowns. Older children will enjoy film screenings and live musical performances.

Aqua Splash

Ultimate Aqua Splash London Aquatic Centre

See the Pool of Champions like never before as Ultimate Aqua Splash transforms the 50 metre competition pool and 20 metre dive pool into an inflatable assault course!

Follow the footsteps of Tom Daley and walk up to the 3 and 5 metre high diving platforms, before sliding down the inflatable slide to kick-start the assault course! The different, challenging inflatables piece together to create the UK’s largest indoor inflatable aquatic experience. As the temperature sky rockets this summer in East London this is a great place to cool down with children 8 years and up who might be a little over the paddling pool!

Makemore Festival

Makemore aims to give artisans a place to show case their work in an interactive way. Families will have the chance to participate in crafting activities over the August Bank Holiday and see what it’s like to be part of a makers community. Events will take place on the East side and there will be music and other family friendly entertainment to enjoy. Alongside the music in the evenings, there will also be ‘supper clubs’. Although there will be a festive atmosphere the organisers want to make sure every aspect of the festival is welcoming to kids, adults and teenagers alike.

Hackney Downs Summer Festival

Get into the family friendly groove in Hackney Downs this summer with balearic beats curated by We Are The Sunset bumping from an outdoor Funktion one sound system! Headlining the disco ball caravan will be Justin Robertson! He’ll be joined by Andy Taylor and a slew of other amazing DJs. Hackney Downs also has an amazing adventure playground and Hackney Play Bus will be parking up too. All this along with great street food, market stalls and laid back summer vibes. This is one event to make for a brilliant bank holiday weekend.
