As the days draw shorter and the weather chillier it can be very tempting to try to hibernate. Apparently, we’re expecting the coldest November on record! Going outside, getting them all bundled up and finally getting out there can seem like mission impossible some days. #1 Diwali Festival of Light-Greenwich National Maritime Museum

Celebrate new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance this Saturday with Diwali, the most popular of festivals on the Hindu calendar. Families joining the celebrations at the Greenwich National Maritime Museum can try drumming, rangoli art and lantern making or joining the lantern parade to the river.

#2 Languages of London Festival- Museum of London Docklands

A festival for all ages, celebrating the multicultural languages of East London, will take over the Museum of London Docklands this weekend. With Bengali snack making, Huegenot weaving, Spanish lessons, Somali story telling and more. Families can even try their hands at very modern ways of communicating like Graffiti spray painting and emoji key ring making!

#3 Fireworks Night- Victoria Park

Lucky residents of Tower Hamlets are treated to another free fireworks display. Last year’s display was a pyrotechnic masterpiece and this year will no doubt be the same. Head to the park for 7pm to ooh and ahhh at the ‘monstrous’ themed whizzbanging extravaganza marking the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelly’s ‘Frankenstein’!

#4 Disco Loco- Hackney Showroom

A party inspired by the season of lights sure to dazzle your little dreamers. Come for an indoor laser light show, bhajis, samosas and some henna magic. Find out why Disco Loco were invited to open for London’s Biggest Birthday Party at Smithfields Market this summer!  Expect lots of fun for all the family hosted by MC Chu-i and DJs Emilia Harmony, Reverend Milo Speedwagon & Mark Rostron.

#5 Jazz for Toddlers- Stratford Circus

Part of the EFG London Jazz Festival 2018, this interactive session will be led by award-winning saxophonist Sue McKenzie, and double bassist Una MacGlone who specialises in teaching improvisational music to early years. Along with great live jazz, your family can participate in call and response and you’ll leave with some inspiring ideas to try with your little ones at home. Give your little ones an intro to Jazz this November at Stratford Circus before all they want to hear is the Frozen soundtrack on repeat.

#6 Baby Loves Disco- Shoreditch Townhall

Some of you may remember some pretty amazing parties back in the heady days of Shoreditch, long before parenting. Although maybe not quite the same experience, now you can bring the famalam along for Baby Loves Disco at Shoreditch Town Hall. Show them your moves Mums and Dads! With resident club DJs mixing feelgood chart floorfillers and nostalgic pop classics. To make the party extra fun for little ones there will be play tents and inflatables, balloons, bubbles, dressing up, arts and crafts, healthy snacks and dancefloor fun with games and giveaways.

#7 Sailors & Starlight Family Rave- Museum of London Docklands

Let the stars guide you to BFLF’s Sailors & Starlight family rave at the Museum of London Docklands. Everyone from the smallest swashbuckler to the biggest buccaneer will love partying to classic acid house, techno, drum ‘n’ bass and more with Baker & Beale. Take part in multi-sensory dancefloor delights, live DJ, glitter cannons, giant balloons, bubble machines and the famous parachute dance. The Mudlarks Children’s gallery will be open for little explorers or families can take a break in the chill out zone.

#8 Pirate’s Life Sleepover- Museum of Childhood

“If you want to be a pirate you don’t need a patch or sword, you just need your best pyjamas and a bed to climb aboard”-Pirates in Pyjamas

Come ye’ wee scallywags o’ 6-12 years, bring yer quarter masters and spend a swashbuckling night, listen to some seafaring pirate lore, take part in yaarsome games and a torch-lit hunt of the museum’s treasures.

This event will make for a fab intro to the V&A Museum of Childhood’s first major exhibition focusing on fictional pirates and their influence in popular culture. Developed in collaboration with children, the exhibition’s immersive and playful set design takes its young visitors into an imaginary swashbuckling world of adventure and exploration. At its heart a large-scale pirate ship inspires learning through active play. Although the sleepover is £40pp the exhibition is available for all ages to visit for free.

#9 Snow White, Rose Red and Bear Brown- Halfmoon Theatre

Snow White and Rose Red – sisters, twins, best friends – have lived in the forest since they were babes in the wood. Kind and caring but sometimes a little over enthusiastic in their deeds their quiet life is soon interrupted by a friendly bear and a new chapter begins. A wonderful new show from the Woods of Widdershins, using puppets, storytelling, original music and a fantastical fairytale forest perfect for ages 4+

#10 The Gruffalo – Stratford Circus Arts Centre

Our new favourite festive family tradition, The Gruffalo, will be brought to life this Christmas season. Following a monstrous West End success, Tall Stories’ smash hit version of the much loved Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler picture book will be performed for audiences at the Stratford Circus Arts Centre! Why not make your day complete with a visit to the Discover Children’s Story Centre A World Inside a Book: Gruffalos, Dragons and Other Creatures?
