Geffrye gardens

Geffrye GardensPlay, Performance & Pastimes

Summer in the city! This August head to the lush green oasis of the Geffrye gardens and visit the recently redesigned allotment by Bourne & Hollingsworth, for a fun-filled family day with activities for children aged 2 -16. Spread out your blanket and share a feast on the lawns of this beautiful walled sanctuary.

For the youngest visitors there will be Nursery Rhyme Time sessions, activity packs and trails. Older children will enjoy digital and creative activities changing each week. The first week, children will experiment with watercolour painting and make bunting to decorate their rooms or make up their own TV Diorama inspired by their fave TV shows. The following week, they can make and decorate musical instruments, make optical toys like zoetropes and spinning toys or flip books, or create their own comic book heroes using a digital app. In the final week, they’ll get to collect all of their special summer memories in a digital scrapbooking workshop, reimagine household objects, play a Victorian card game, or conjure up some magic!

Families can also book to visit the 18th century almshouses. A great way to encourage gratitude for the times that we live in and reflect together on what has happened in history to improve our plight.

Drinks and light refreshments will be available but families are welcome to bring or buy their own picnic lunch too. We recommend some summer rolls from BunBunBun!

As the museum buildings are currently closed until 2020 for the transformational “Unlocking the Geffrye” development, most of the activities will take place in the Geffrye gardens either on the lawn or under a big canopy. Let’s pray for sunshine but keep an eye on the forecast, it’s a British summer after all.

*Children under 11 must be accompanied at all times by an adult.  Many of the workshops are drop-in. Booking for timed workshops opens 30 minutes in advance of each session and places are first-come first served, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
