Declutter With Hannah

Anyone feeling the squash and the squeeze this January? Toys from well-meaning relatives can overwhelm the average East London home. Add the chaos of a toddler and you might be planning an escape to Essex. But before you do anything drastic, perhaps you should meet Hannah Ashwell Dickenson of Declutter with Hannah.

Hannah is mother of two herself so has a great understanding of what we’re all going through. She is a  member of the Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers (APDO UK) and helps clients to clear out and organise their home or workspace.

THMs members can take advantage of her generous offer of 20% off!

We caught up with Hannah to find out more about the service she provides and some hot tips on how to handle the chaos.

What inspired you to start Declutter With Hannah?

I was suffocated by ‘stuff’. I found myself constantly tidying up toys, shoes, clothes, doing endless rounds of washing and feeling stressed and resentful.

I set about clearing the clutter, I threw away, sold and donated bags of stuff. I assessed my priorities. I wanted more quality time with my children, to start working again, less debt, and to be more content. I took action and now I feel brighter, lighter and more free.

How does Declutter With Hannah work?

Clients get in touch with me when they are overwhelmed and in need of support in getting their clutter under control. I offer encouragement, strategies and practical advice to help them declutter various aspects of their homes and offices. I work many busy families who are time-poor and need help simplifying their homes. I have two children so I understand the pressures of juggling school runs, work and life-admin!

What advice do you have for us sentimental mums who just can’t let go?

For items such as baby clothes I find it useful to nominate just one box to keep things in and when that box is full have a little sort and decide if you are ready to let a few things go. It’s also worth thinking about who else might benefit from your children’s outgrown clothes. Much better to donate than letting them get moth-eaten in your loft!

As for children’s art work – choose one small area to display art projects and get your children into the habit of choosing what gets displayed and what can go. That gives them a sense of pride their creations. You can always take photos of the items and create a book as a lovely keep-sake.

With just 15 minutes to create a sense of calm what would you recommend mums do?

Clear the kitchen table and kitchen surfaces! Find a box and put items from the table and kitchen surfaces that belong elsewhere and return them to their rightful homes. The aim is then to maintain those clear surfaces. Even just one uncluttered shelf can make you feel calmer and more in control of things.

And lastly, how do you stop the toys from taking over?

Less is more! Children get overwhelmed too. Try to remember that children benefit from ‘open toys’ (ones that have unlimited imaginative play – blocks, Lego, figures, play food for example) rather than ‘closed toys’ that a child can complete and get bored easily with (like pressing buttons that make sounds, puzzles). My Dad usually gifts my girls’ an experience for Christmas and birthdays. This Christmas he took them both to see The Snowman which they all loved. No clutter and I got a bonus morning to myself!
