Paul Fraiser 300

French artisan bakery Paul has opened on Lower Thames Street, overlooking the river. The classic French bakery and café has a great position next to the Tower of London and overlooking The Thames and Tower Bridge.

There’s plenty of seating inside and outside of the bakery if you want have a sit-down meal or alternatively, (as we did when a lovely gift card arrived in the post), head straight for the cakes and treat yourself to a decadent afternoon tea.

Running since 1889, Paul is a five generation family-run bakery, which churns out award-winning freshly baked breads and traditional French hand-crafted viennoiserie and fine patisserie.

We tasted tested our way through some of Paul’s classics:

  • Frasier Slice – Layers of light sponge cake, fresh strawberries, whipped mousseline cream and a bright green layer of marzipan gave this a lovely sweet finish – a beautiful looking cake that lives up to its looks in taste!
  • Éclair Paris Brest – If you like your classic eclairs and your fond of a nut or two this is for you. Soft almond flaked choux pastry, fantastically light praline-flavoured cream and caramelised hazelnuts complete this dreamy affair.
  • Raspberry Tartlette – An absolute classic. Fresh raspberries piled high on top of a custard cream tart. The pastry was fresh and flaky.
  •  Craquant Slice – My favourite of the four. This was a delicious dark sponge cake with delicate layers of crunchy praline and chocolate ganache and chocolate glaze on top – a chocoholics dream.
